MODERN OPSEC IN THE AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA: WHAT MILITARY SPOUSES NEED TO KNOW

There’s a moment most military spouses have had, usually late at night, scrolling, maybe a little overwhelmed, where you start typing something out. A frustration. A fear. A “most of you have no idea what’s really going on or how hard this life is” kind of post.
Then you pause.
Because as a military spouse, even something as simple as a social media post can carry a little more weight than it does for everyone else.
In a world of TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and other forms of social media — where anything can go viral in minutes, OPSEC isn’t just something our spouses are trained on anymore; it’s something we, as spouses, need to be living by.
Before we share, we really need to consider, and potentially be completely understanding of if the “clicks,” the “likes” and the potential of “instant fame” are worth the risks.

What OPSEC Really Means for Military Families Today
OPSEC (operational security) is about protecting information that could put service members, missions, or families at risk. Our spouses are trained on the obvious things: deployment dates, locations, unit details, movement schedules.
But what’s changed is how easily everything else spreads.
Now, even the most innocent detail, something that feels personal, harmless, or emotional, can be shared, reshared, clipped, and pieced together into something much bigger.
Once it’s out there, there’s no taking it back.

When Real Life Becomes Public: A Recent Example
Recently, military spouse Kendall Brown shared her experience and fears about her husband’s deployment during an appearance on TMZ Live.
It was honest, raw, emotional, and as a military spouse watching myself, a bit “scary.” I’m not talking scary in the sense of what she said, but scary that she comfortably stated so many things that would be posted online, for the world to hear and know.
That’s exactly why it got people’s attention, and it resonated.
Her honesty about the fear and emotional weight of the current climate and situations struck a nerve in the military community.
Many people felt it immediately, thinking, “Yes, that’s exactly it.”
Others felt a bit of hesitation, thinking, “That’s not how all of us feel or think about this situation.” And underneath both reactions was a shared awareness that what we say publicly in this life carries a different kind of weight.
Did she reveal classified information? Technically, no.
This shows that OPSEC isn't just about official stuff; it's also about our personal, daily lives, especially when we put them out there for the world to see.
When the audience shifts from a few friends to potentially millions of viewers, the stakes shift.

Why Social Media Raises the Stakes for Our Service Members
Living this life has always required a level of awareness, but social media has added a whole new layer. What feels like sharing “your story” can quickly become an unlocked danger. A post, a comment, or an interview can travel far and wide. What you say may be twisted, leaked, or edited to become something more.
Once something is public, it can be clipped, reframed, pulled into political conversations, or taken out of context—even if your intention was simply to be heard.
"Personal" doesn’t always mean "private." You don’t have to share sensitive details for something to become sensitive. Sometimes it’s not what you say outright, but what someone else can piece together from it.
That’s the hard part of modern military spouse life. We’re not just managing emotions, households, and constant change. We’re also navigating visibility.
OPSEC Tips for Military Spouses From a Military Spouse
So what does OPSEC mean for us in a digital era?
I’m the first to use social media as an outlet, so I want to be clear: I don’t think OPSEC means staying silent. I’m not one to sit and pretend everything is fine when it’s not.
It does mean being intentional.
Pause before you post. Or before you speak. Asking yourself: Could this be misinterpreted? Could my words be easily twisted? Could this hint at something I don’t realize I’m sharing? Am I even slightly putting a service member, or their family members, at risk?
As military spouses, we have a responsibility to keep certain boundaries in place: avoiding public conversations about deployment timelines, locations, unit activity, or anything that could create a clearer picture than intended.
It’s about learning how to separate emotion from specifics.
Our experiences are real and deserve to be talked about. The fear, the pride, the frustration, the loneliness, that’s all part of this life. Tying those emotions to real-time details about operations or deployments is where things can unintentionally cross a line.

The Balancing Act of Respecting OPSEC and “Real” Life
OPSEC isn’t like a checklist. It involves making everyday decisions. It's thinking before speaking or posting. It means choosing what to share and what to hold close — no matter how frustrated we might feel.
Moments like Kendall Brown’s aren’t meant to be criticized. No one is here to “call her out.” If anything, situations like Kendall’s draw attention to something deeply familiar to most military spouses: the need to be understood in moments that feel overwhelming.
That’s something this community will always relate to.
It also serves as a reminder that in a world where everything is amplified, even our most human moments can have unintended reach. Being mindful of that isn’t about silencing ourselves. It’s about protecting the people we love in ways that aren’t always visible, but are always important.
